SOLE Winter 2020 Highlights
Tree Rack

The SOLE program has had a busy winter season! The students constructed a wreath stand for the Wreaths Across America ceremony that was held in Cornish, and also made wreaths for staff members in the school. They hand carved and wood burned walking sticks that will be donated to two charity auctions. Students also have learned about physics as it applies to ice skating and took part in a tree survey with Pete Hagerty.

SOLE Fall 2019 Highlights
Sole on Pilot Boat

This Fall, students of the SOLE program had the rare opportunity to go sailing on Casco Bay aboard a historic former pilot boat. Timberwind, is a two-masted schooner that was built in 1931 by Victor Cole at Union Wharf in Portland and measures 96 feet in length. Until 1969, it was named the Portland Pilot and was responsible for meeting incoming vessels outside the harbor to pilot them in. Students learned about the history of Portland's working waterfront, the parts of a sailboat, helped raise and lower the sails, and learned how to coil long lengths of rope to prevent tangling and to keep the deck clear for walking. It was a beautiful day, and there were sightings of many seabird species and Harbor Seals too!
